England legend Alec Stewart plays umpire in a county match

England legend Alec Stewart is seen on the field during the County Championship match between Surrey and Northamptonshire. However, he was not giving any suggestions but was taking the responsibility of umpiring at square leg.

Stewart, who is also the Surrey county team’s director of cricket, was forced to act as an umpire after the appointed official – Russell Warren – left the field because he was not feeling well.

A photograph of Stewart in his temporary role was posted by photographer Kyle Andrews on his Twitter handle.

“We are umpire short, so Surrey director of cricket and England legend Alec Stewart is on square leg duty,” Kyle wrote in the post’s caption box.

Netizens had a field day after seeing Stewart on the field in his new role.

Responding to the post, a fan wrote, “Please tell me he is counting balls with 6 stones or random collection of coins found in the car park?” The user also used the ‘rolling on the floor laughing’ emoji in the post.

“I think he is using stones collected from the car park area,” read another comment on the post.

“Stewart looking spotless as ever,” wrote another fan.

Another cricket enthusiast wrote, “Last time I saw him, I looked more fit than some of the players in his charge.”

One fan took a dig at England’s batting line-up led by Joe Root by saying, “We’re a batsman or 2 shorts at the Oval, if he’s passionate about having a job there.”

David Ripley, Northent’s head coach, took over from Stewart as the umpire when the hosts came into the field.

Batting first, Surrey scored 252 runs in their innings. In response, he reduced the Northants to just 171.

At the end of the second day’s play, Surrey took a lead of 183 runs with a lead of 102 runs for the loss of four wickets.
