Elon Musk’s Starlink halts pre-bookings for satellite internet service in India – Times of India

Earlier this week, the Indian government issued a public advisory against the Elon Musk-backed company. starlink Internet Services. According to the government, the company is yet to get a license to offer satellite-based internet services in the country and in a public advisory it has asked citizens not to pay for services advertised by Starlink. The government also asked the company to refrain from booking satellite internet services in India “with immediate effect”. Starlink has now stopped the pre-bookings for its services in India.
Earlier, SpaceX The beta version was accepting pre-orders for Starlink Internet Services at a fully refundable deposit of $99. The website did not display the value of the service in Rs. Now when you enter an Indian service address, the website shows a message “Starlink is not yet available in your area, but we continue to expand our coverage area as we launch more satellites. Please check back for future availability in your area.”
Starlink’s newly appointed Country Director Sanjay Bhargava recently said that the pre-orders from India have crossed 5,000. He also mentioned that the company is looking for collaborations with telecom companies in India.
So far, the company hasn’t disclosed whether users you’ve already paid for a subscription to will receive an automatic refund for this reason. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made it clear that the company needs to obtain a license before offering satellite-based services in India. This means that the company will be allowed to provide the services after getting the license and fulfilling the regulatory conditions due in India.
When available in India, the internet service will compete with the likes of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea in the broadband segment. In the satellite broadband space, the company will be a direct competitor to the Bharti Group-backed OneWeb.
