Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigns ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, leaving Election Commission as a one-member body under CEC Rajiv Kumar

Election Commissioner Arun Goel tendered his resignation on Saturday, just days before the poll body is set to announce the schedule for Lok Sabha Election 2024. With Goel’s resignation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is now just a one-member body headed by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar.

Goel’s departure comes as a surprise as he had three years left in his tenure. There was already one vacancy for an Election Commissioner. Earlier, Election Commissioner Anup Pandey had retired in February.

He had assumed charge as Election Commissioner (EC) of India on November 21, 2022. Goel, an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1985 batch, Punjab cadre superannuated as Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industry, Govt of India after more than 37 years of service.

Born on December 7, 1962, at Patiala, he is M. Sc. (Mathematics) and was awarded Chancellors Medal of Excellence for being First Class First and Record Breaker throughout all the examinations of Punjabi University. He is Post-Graduate with Distinction in Development Economics from Churchill College, University of Cambridge, England and has been trained at John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.
