El Salvador re-elected attorney general who fueled conflict with the US

San Salvador: El Salvador’s Congress on Wednesday re-elected Rodolfo Delgado as attorney general for three more years, despite US concerns about his appointment and his decision to end a US-backed anti-corruption pact. .

In May, Delgado was appointed by lawmakers from President Nayib Bukele’s ruling party after Congress removed his predecessor for his alleged ties to the right-wing opposition Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA).

Congress then also removed five justices from the Supreme Court of El Salvador, which is widely seen as still remaining a few checks on Bukele’s power. This prompted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to express his concern over the incidents.

Bukele congratulated Delgado on his reappointment after 66 of the 84 lawmakers voted to retain him for three more years.

In June, Delgado said that El Salvador was pulling out of an anti-corruption agreement with the Organization of American States (OAS), in protest of the OAS decision to take on a member of ARENA as advisor, whose investigation is going on.

Critics argue that Delgado is reluctant to investigate possible corruption cases under the Bukele administration and shows a lack of independence. Delgado dismissed the criticism, saying his office was going after corruption.
