Earthquake tremors in Greek islands near Turkey

The Athens-based Institute of Geodynamics said a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck early Sunday in the Aegean Sea near the small Greek island of Nisiros, west of Rhodes.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 23 kilometers (14.3 mi) south-west of Nisiros, a small island, round in shape with about 1,000 inhabitants and an active volcano. The institute reported that the quake struck at 7:31 a.m. local time (0431 GMT) at a depth of 15.6 kilometers (9.7 miles).

Tremors were also felt in the Turkish coastal city of Datka in Mugla province. Turkey’s Emergency and Disasters Authority AFAD gave it a magnitude of 5.5. Turkish officials have not reported any damage.

Earlier, tremors of magnitude 4.7 and 4.1 were felt twice late Saturday night and early Sunday.

There have been many aftershocks since then. There are no reports of injury or damage.
