Durga Puja violence in Bangladesh ‘disturbing’: MEA

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday termed as “disturbing” reports of attacks on Hindu temples and Durga Puja places in Bangladesh and said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka as well as consulates in the neighboring country are in close contact with officials . “We have seen some disturbing reports of untoward incidents related to attacks on religious congregations in Bangladesh,” said Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

“The Bangladesh government has responded quickly to ensure control of the situation, including the deployment of law enforcement machinery,” Bagchi said.

Asked about the alleged attacks on Durga Puja pandals and temples in Bangladesh, he said, “We also understand that the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh are continuing with the support of government agencies and of course a large number of people. ” PTI reported.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a stern warning and said those involved in the attacks on Hindu temples and Durga Puja places in Comilla will not be spared.

“The incidents in Comilla are being thoroughly investigated. No one will be spared. It doesn’t matter what religion they belong to. They will be hunted down and punished,” she said, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to reports, Bangladesh Police on Wednesday arrested 43 people in the city of Comilla for attacking Hindu houses and vandalizing temples.
