DU OBE protest explained: From online exams to arrest of students, all you need to know

Delhi University students have been demanding ‘open book examination’ in online mode for ‘even’ semester outside the campus for the past several days. The protests that broke out on Monday led to many students being detained by the police and many went on hunger strike. Here’s a timeline that leads to the protest.

DU is reopening this year Feb-March 2022 (DU Opens)

After a long haul, the university reopened its doors to students in mid-February this year. Thereafter, the DU administration decided to conduct the exam for odd semester students in OBE format in view of the sudden change from online to offline. The exam was conducted in March and April.

What happened because of the protest?

For the even semester students, the varsity had decided to go offline, or with pen and paper-based exams that are scheduled to be held in May and June. This resulted in students protesting and demanding that their exams should also be conducted in OBE format. Even semester students argue that the university is forcing them to appear for offline examinations, despite the fact that around 70 per cent of their syllabus was completed online.

After the administration announced its plan to conduct the physical examination, the students started protesting against the decision and raised their demands on several memoranda. On Monday, 5 April, about 1000 protesters arrived at the Faculty of Arts and demanded that the university change its decision.

Several students were reportedly detained during the protest but were later released. Now, the students have decided to start a hunger strike to put their demand for OBE more firmly.

DU released exemption

Addressing the concerns of the students, DU released a notification announcing relaxation for the candidates who appeared for the exam in physical mode. As per the guidelines mentioned in the notification, students will be given an additional 30 minutes as a “special one-time measure” to write the exam.

In addition, students will be provided with additional options in the questions. The university has also claimed that it will conduct the second phase of the examination for those students who have filled the examination form but are unable to appear for it due to “reasonable reasons”. The last date to submit the examination form as decided by the university is 15th April.
