Bhopal:

A dog was seen eating the body of a dead child outside a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Ashoknagar. The hospital has ordered an inquiry into the shocking incident. A sweeper saw the dog with the dead body of the newborn and drove it away.

Ashoknagar Hospital civil surgeon Dr DK Bhargava told NDTV, “We got the information in the morning. We have now kept the body safe in the post-mortem room and have informed the police as well. In earlier cases, we have seen that the family members have died. The members don’t bury the bodies of newborn babies properly. They throw the bodies in haste.”

A similar incident took place outside the hospital in August last year, when stray dogs were found eating the newborn’s body.

Locals claim that this is the fourth such incident in the last two years.

The hospital, which treats around 400 patients daily, is facing a shortage of doctors and other health workers. There are 24 sanctioned posts of doctors in the hospital, out of which 20 posts are vacant. The hospital has the approval of 49 ward boys and technicians. But at present 31 of these posts are vacant.

The situation is the same in other medical colleges of the state and also in the government. A total of 856 posts are vacant in 13 medical colleges across the state. Despite a total of 8,904 vacancies in government hospitals, there are only 4,815 doctors. There is also a shortage of 16,000 nursing staff.
