The home minister responded to allegations that the BJP was trying to “rewrite the country’s history” by renaming BJP-ruled states or planning to rename cities.

Union Minister Amit Shah has rejected allegations that the Bharatiya Janata Party is erasing Mughal history and changing the names of important cities and places associated with the Mughals. The minister said the decisions taken by the Modi-led government were “well thought out” and well within their “statutory rights”.

“No one’s contribution should be removed, nor do we want to remove them. But if someone wants to establish the tradition of the country then no one should have any objection.

“We have not changed the name of a single city which did not have an old name earlier. Our governments have taken decisions after thinking. Every government has its own statutory rights,” Shah told the agency.

A few days ago, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sangam Lal Gupta urged Amit Shah to rename UP capital Lucknow as “Lakhanpur or Laxmanpur”.

The MP had said that Lucknow was earlier named Lakhanpur and Laxmanpur in Treta Yuga and Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula changed its name to Lucknow.

When Shah was asked about allegations of writing a “re-imagined history” of J&K and erasing the contribution of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru, the home minister said Article 370 was inserted in the Constitution by the government of India’s first prime minister.
