Digging tunnel, misbehaving during trial proved costly | India News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The special court in its order on the quantum of sentence — death penalty for 38 and life in jail until death for 11 — took note of the misbehavior of many convicts before the court as well as their jail conduct.
In many submissions, the court observed, they had behaved in a rude manner before the court. The jail records also listed numerous disciplinary breaches. One of the major misdemeanours was the brazen incident of digging a 213-foot tunnel inside Sabarmati central jail. In February 2013, jail authorities discovered a tunnel in barrack No. 4 where 14 of the Ahmedabad serial blasts case undertrials were lodged.
The court also cited all pending criminal cases against the convicts in courts in different states. The court in detail recorded the convicts’ casual and wanton behavior during court hearings and in prison.
