Armand Duplantis failed in an attempt to improve his own world record, but the Swedish pole vaulter delighted home fans with another 6m victory at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm on Sunday.

Duplantis covered 6.02m before making three attempts at 6.19m, failing all three times in his bid to better the 6.18m mark he had set last year.

Two-time world champion Sam Kendricks of the United States finished second with 5.92m in the countdown to 2012 Olympic gold medalist Renaud Lavillenie of France.

“I feel blessed to be here today with my family and friends, and everyone is watching,” Duplantis said.

“It was really important for me to go out here and try over six meters, and then maybe take some better shots at the world record, but 6.02 overall was a good jump so I can’t complain that much “

Just 24 other Walters in history have managed to clear the six metres, and Duplantis’ continued consistency at that height marked him as a clear favorite for gold at the 23 July–8 August Tokyo Olympics.
