Now, the Deoghar district administration has kept an eye on its famous trees to boost the business prospects of the traditional peda makers there.
Speaking to TOI on Saturday, Neeraj Kumar, Deoghar district coordinator of the Chief Minister’s Small and Cottage Enterprises Development Board said that they have started the process of registering all peda makers/manufacturers in the district and will continue till October 6 before formalizing it. He said, “In September, we held a meeting with all peda manufacturers under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri to make them aware about the importance of GI tag for any product and why it would be helpful for them. The traders were asked to register with the District Industries Department by 30 September. However, we have now extended the window as the response has not been good. ”
Kumar said that another round of awareness workshop would be held on October 4. “Till now, around 20 peda makers have registered with us, but we are trying to connect more and more people. There are around 200 peda makers in Deoghar.
The official said that so far only Mathura trees have got the GI tag in the country.
On GI tagging, Kumar said that it defines the origin of a particular food/product and is recognized under the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai is the only competent authority for grant of GI tag. he said.
“GI tag will impart authenticity and uniqueness to a product. Once we get the GI tag for Deoghar trees, the traders there can easily have the option of sitting in Deoghar and selling their products globally. This will give a boost to their businesses,” he said, adding that they are now in the process of forming a cooperative society of all peda makers to start the application process.
