Barracks of Ballia Jail filled with water, 939 prisoners sacked Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: Incessant rain wreaked havoc in Ballia and Azamgarh districts on Friday and Saturday. Due to heavy waterlogging inside Ballia Jail, 939 prisoners were shifted to neighboring districts. Heavy pumps were being arranged to clear the water logging from the mohallas of Azamgarh city.
Divisional commissioner Azamgarh Vijay Biswas Pant, who convened a meeting of officials on Saturday evening to finalize strategies to clean the waterlogged areas of Ballia and Azamgarh, told TOI, “The posh city areas of both the districts are badly affected. are affected. Most of the areas of Azamgarh are submerged, while the inmates have been shifted to jails in Azamgarh and Ambedkar Nagar districts due to massive waterlogging inside the Ballia Jail.
Ballia district jail superintendent Lal Ratnakar Singh said 939 prisoners, including 61 women, have been shifted to neighboring districts due to heavy waterlogging. 600 prisoners have been sent to Azamgarh Jail while 339 have been shifted to Ambedkar Nagar Jail.
A large batch of officers were engaged in arranging buses for shifting of prisoners amid tight security arrangements. Pant said that the 100 pumps already installed were insufficient, additional heavy duty pumps over 150 HP were installed to remove waterlogging in the urban areas of Azamgarh.
District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar ensured that at least six marriage halls and lawns affected by waterlogging are converted into shelter homes.
While Varanasi received 47 mm of rain on Friday, there was some rain on Saturday. However, the weather remained pleasant due to cloud cover. As per IMD’s forecast, it will be cloudy for two-three days.
During incessant rains in Chandauli, a mud house collapsed in Hingutargarh in Dhanapur and Sarvanandapur in other sandy areas, killing Kamli Devi (38) and Ramdihal Yadav (48) under the rubble.
