Delhi, your auto-rickshaw and cab ride will be costlier as fare hike proposal likely to get green signal

Passengers using public transport such as auto-rickshaws and cabs may face costly rides. The Delhi government has given in-principle approval to the proposal to hike auto-rickshaw and taxi fares, officials said on Friday.

As per the proposal, which is likely to come up for cabinet approval during the next meeting, the fee for three-wheelers will be increased by Rs 1.50 for every kilometer, while the basic fare for taxis will be increased by Rs 15. Increase in CNG prices, officials said.

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot said that the government is planning to increase the fare. It constituted a 13-member fare revision committee in April.

The committee, in its report submitted in May, had recommended a hike of Re 1 per kilometer for three-wheelers and up to 60 per cent for taxis. Officials said the meter down charge (base price) for auto-rickshaws will be revised to Rs 30 instead of Rs 25, and Rs 11 instead of Rs 9.50 for every kilometer thereafter.

For taxis, the meter down charge will be Rs 40 instead of Rs 25. For non-AC taxis, the fare for each kilometer will be Rs 17 instead of Rs 14, while the fare for AC taxis will be revised from Rs 16 to Rs 20.

App-based aggregators had already hiked their prices, while there was no revision in the prices of auto-rickshaws and taxis whose fares are controlled by the government.

Sources said taxi fares were last revised in 2013. He said that the committee considered the increase in the prices of CNG and the prices of spare parts of vehicles over the nine years.

Gehlot said, “Based on the recommendations, we will increase the fares after the cabinet approval.” PTI,

In six months, the price of CNG has increased to Rs 75.61 per kg. On January 1, it was Rs 52.04. The committee had traveled in auto-rickshaws and taxis to assess the mood of the drivers before making its recommendations.
