Delhi MCD Election 2022: 67% of Councillors Elected are Crorepatis, Says ADR Report

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms, at least 67 per cent of the 250 newly elected councilors in the MCD are crorepatis. In 2017, when elections were held in 270 wards of the erstwhile three municipal corporations, 51 per cent of the 266 councilors analyzed were crorepatis, it said.

After the delimitation of wards earlier this year, the number of seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) came down to 250.

The AAP ended the BJP’s 15-year tenure in the MCD – divided into North, South and East corporations in 2012 and unified this year – by winning 134 seats, restricting the BJP to 104. The Congress won only nine seats while three wards went to independent candidates.

“Of the 248 winning candidates analysed, 167 (67 per cent) are crorepatis. Of the 266 corporators analyzed during the MCD election(s) in 2017, 135 (51 per cent) corporators were crorepatis.

It said 82 councilors who declared assets of more than Rs 1 crore were from the BJP – the highest among all parties.

AAP has 77 councilors who are self-proclaimed crorepatis.

“…BJP 82 out of 104 (79 per cent), AAP 77 (58 per cent) out of 132, INC (Indian National Congress) 6 out of nine (67 per cent) and 2 (67 per cent) seventy three independents victorious Candidates have declared assets of more than one crore rupees.

Association for Democratic Reforms and Delhi Election Watch analyzed the affidavits of 248 out of 250 corporators in the MCD elections. The assets of the two winning candidates could not be analyzed due to non-availability of clear and complete affidavits with the State Election Commission, Delhi.

The average assets of the winning candidate per 104 BJP corporators is Rs 5.29 crore, while that of 132 AAP corporators analyzed is Rs 3.56 crore, the report said.

The Association for Democratic Reforms said the average assets per candidate for the nine Congress corporators was Rs 4.09 crore. The average assets of the three independent councilors is Rs 5.53 crore.

Voting was held on December 4 and the results were declared on Wednesday.
