Defense challenges and upgradation of armed forces discussed in high level meeting of PM: Sources

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and was also attended by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

It is being reported by news agency ANI that the future challenges in the defense sector and equipping the armed forces with modern equipment were discussed.

ANI sources said that aspects related to involving more youth, start-ups and the strategic community in this task were also discussed during the meeting.

The meeting assumes significance as it took place two days after a drone strike on the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Jammu in which two jawans were injured.

Following the Jammu drone strike, India reminded the UN General Assembly that the threat of terrorists using armed drones to strike strategic and commercial assets needs to be seriously considered.

Speaking at the 2nd High Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States at the General Assembly, Special Secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs, VSK Kaumudi said: “Today, misuse of information and communication technology such as terrorist propaganda, bigotry and Internet and social media for cadre recruitment; misuse of new payment methods and crowdfunding platforms to finance terrorism; And the misuse of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes has emerged as one of the gravest threats to terrorism and will set the counter-terrorism paradigm going forward.”

He said that since these drones are a low-cost and readily available alternative, terrorist groups have started using them for their nefarious purposes such as intelligence gathering, delivery of weapons/explosives, and targeted attacks. A serious threat and conflict are security agencies around the world.
