DCC Approves Satellite Connectivity for Telecom Networks; BharatNet tender worth Rs 19,041 crore: DoT secretary – Times of India

New Delhi: telecommunications supreme body of department digital communication commission (DCCIt has approved the provision of using satellite connectivity in telecom networks to provide services in remote areas where it is difficult to have optical fiber network, a senior official said on Monday.
Telecom secretary Anshu Prakash told PTI DCC (formerly Telecom Commission) has also issued . The request for proposal for the rollout of the BharatNet Project with a viability gap funding of Rs 19,041 crore in Public Private Partnership mode for broadband services in villages in 16 states.
“In view of the ease of doing business, DCC has approved the provision of cellular backhaul connectivity through satellite through VSAT for telecom services as per the recommendation of TRAI.
“This will help telecom companies to service remote areas where it is difficult to have optical fiber,” Prakash said.
The decision will allow commercial VSAT CUG (Closed User Group) service providers to provide backhaul connectivity to cellular mobile services through satellite to telecom operators using VSATs.
It will help telecom operators to connect their mobile towers in difficult terrain using satellite services through VSAT (Very-Small-Aperture Terminal) system.
Bharti Airtel will get an early lead with the new permission Bharti Group Has invested in satellite communications firm OneWeb.
VSAT service providers will also be able to support telecom operators to set up Wi-Fi hotspots.
Prakash further said that within a week of the Cabinet’s approval to the Public Private Partnership mode for rollout of BharatNet in 16 states with a Viability Gap Funding of Rs 19,041 crore, DCC has approved the RFP for the project.
“The Department of Telecommunications will issue tenders for PPP mode rollout of BharatNet in 16 states in seven days,” Prakash said.
The cabinet last week approved PPP mode to expedite the rollout of BharatNet project for broadband services in villages.
There are 16 states under this scheme – Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The decision to include private players was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on August 15, 2020, that around 6 lakh villages in the country would be connected to broadband in 1,000 days.
According to official figures, 1.56 lakh out of 2.5 lakh gram panchayats have been connected with broadband.
The government has prepared nine packages for the project involving some small states. It announced that no single player would get more than four packages.
