Days Ahead of Tripura Municipal Elections, Political Temperature Soars as TMC, BJP Business Barbs

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are once again in a daze ahead of the civic polls to be held in Tripura on November 25. For the past several days, the political mercury in the state has been rising due to the municipal elections. The TMC had on Saturday alleged that its leader Babul Supriyo was assaulted.

A major uproar broke out outside Agartala police station on Sunday following the arrest of Trinamool Congress youth president Sayoni Ghosh for allegedly threatening Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. He was granted bail by a court on Monday.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who arrived in Tripura’s capital Agartala on Monday, was not allowed by the police to hold a rally. Police cited the law and order situation in the state and political violence as the reason behind the move.

“Democracy is under attack in Tripura,” Banerjee said during a press conference today.

BJP West Bengal President Dilip Ghosh defended the action of Tripura Police and alleged that TMC was disrupting law and order situation in the state ahead of elections.

Commenting on Sayoni Ghosh’s arrest under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) after over 3 hours of questioning on Sunday over Ghosh’s ‘khela hobe biplab babu’ tweet, Ghosh said, “You need to call a sitting Chief Minister What the courage to challenge. They thought it was Bengal police who would help them. I don’t know what will happen when the game starts in Tripura.”

Sayoni Ghosh has been granted bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of West Tripura.

Dilip Ghosh also commented on TMC’s prospects in Tripura civic polls. He said that the residents of Tripura would not give him a chance to get elected.

“TMC is disturbing the law and order situation here as their leaders are nervous ahead of the elections, in which they will lose,” he said.

There are 334 municipal seats in Tripura and TMC has fielded 51 candidates and wants to win them.
