Daughters break barriers, perform mother’s last rites, don’t answer son’s call

Jati Nayak, a resident of Mangalghat in Puri, was cremated by his four daughters after their sons “forgot” their son’s duties. 80-year-old Nayak passed away on Saturday.

Neighbors informed her two sons about the death, but they did not respond to calls to perform their duties. The four married daughters of the caste then decided to break the barriers. He made complete preparations for the cremation and took the dead body to the swargadwar.

The daughters prepared a pyre with the help of some neighbors and carried it shoulder to shoulder to ‘Swargdwar’, four kilometers from Mangalghat, where they were cremated.

Sitamani Sahu, one of the daughters said, “Our brothers were neglecting our mother for the last 10 years. They never let her stay with them. During these years, they did not ask her even once if she was okay. Let alone her food. Before she died, she once fell ill and we had to take her to the hospital in an ambulance. Even then, our brothers chose to remain indifferent.”

“My mother was staying with the younger sister. My brother did not take care of our mother. The four of us then decided to perform his last rites. With the help of neighbours, we took the body and performed the last rites at Swargadwar,” said another daughter Sushila Sahu

After the death of her husband, Nayak had to raise the family as a street vendor. Their daughters are married and sons live with their respective families. The daughters claimed that instead of taking care, they were “torturing” the hero. Even after getting the information of his death, no son came to perform the last rites.

“This is heartbreaking and the death of humanity. Let no son forget his duty towards his parents,” said a resident of Puri.
