australian Daniel Ricciardo won Italian Grand Prix in a surprising McLaren A one-two with Lando Norris at Monza on Sunday while Formula One title rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton kicked each other out of the race.
It was McLaren’s first win since 2012 and Ricciardo’s first since being at Red Bull in 2018.
“About time,” smiled the happy Australian.
“To lead literally from beginning to end, I don’t think any of us expected it.
“To not only win but to get one or two, it’s crazy. It’s huge for McLaren to be on the podium.”
Ricciardo, now an eight-time Grand Prix winner, started in the front row and took the lead over Verstappen at the start and finished his day with a bonus point for the fastest lap.
Valtteri Bottas was third for Mercedes after winning Saturday’s sprint race and then starting from the back of the grid due to an engine penalty.
While McLaren celebrated, Verstappen and Hamilton had nothing to smile about.
With Verstappen lifting Red Bull’s curb and ending up on top of Hamilton’s Mercedes in the gravel, the pair collided and crashed after their pitstop, with a halo head protection device keeping the champion out of harm’s way.
Both exited after a crash in the first chicane, leaving Verstappen’s five-point lead in the championship unchanged.
“That’s what happens when you don’t place,” said Verstappen on team radio.
