Dalits beware of Congress’ election stunts: Mayawati on Channi being made Punjab CM

Sworn in as Charanjit Singh Channi PunjabBSP president Mayawati, the first Dalit chief minister, on Monday asked Dalits to beware of the “election stunts” of the Congress. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also claimed that the Congress is upset with the SAD-BJP alliance for the Punjab Assembly polls.

Congress still does not have faith in Dalits. Dalits need to be very careful about their double standards. I am sure that Dalits will not fall for this stunt.

The reality is that the Congress as well as other political parties think of Dalits only in times of crisis, he alleged, terming Channi’s appointment as an election stunt of the Congress. Channi took oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab on this day.

The Congress’s decision to name Channi, who hails from Rupnagar district in Punjab’s Malwa region, assumes significance as Dalits constitute 32 per cent of the state’s population. The BSP and SAD had formed an alliance in June for the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
