Cyclone Biparjoy: Railways Cancelled 99 Trains Till June 18, 39 Short Terminated

Cyclone Biparjoy, which has been raging over the Arabian Sea for several days, has made landfall in the coastal region of Gujarat, affecting train services, due to which about 99 trains passing through, originating from or terminating in Biparjoy affected areas of Gujarat Will be canceled or short-terminated, said Western Railway.

A senior meteorologist of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the landfall process of extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ has begun and will continue till Thursday midnight.

“23 trains have been cancelled, 3 trains short-terminated and 7 trains short-originated. With this, 99 trains have been cancelled, 39 trains have been short-terminated, while 38 trains have been short-originated till June 18 as a precautionary measure. Regarding the onset of #CycloneBiparjoy in view of passenger safety and train operations,” tweeted Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway.

The IMD said that the wind speed is between 115 to 125 kmph and it could even go up to 140 kmph, said Manorama Mohanty, director of the meteorological department.

The pictures give an idea of ​​the severity of the storm as it approaches the Gujarat coast. Earlier, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Chairman SK Mehta along with senior officials of the port visited Kandla to ensure preparedness in the wake of cyclonic storm Biparjoy and monitor the situation from the signal station.

Hundreds of trucks remained parked at Gandhidham in Kutch after the closure of the Kandla port in the state. In view of the cyclone, a total of six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams evacuated 72 civilians from the Rupen Bunder low-lying area and shifted them to the NDH school in Dwarka.

According to the NDRF, the evacuated civilians include 32 men, 25 women and 15 children. Earlier today, Commander of the Indian Coast Guard Region (North West) Inspector General AK Harbola said that Cyclone Biparjoy would make landfall between 6 pm and 8 pm.

In response to this imminent threat, armed forces have been deployed to the beach to assist the villagers living in the border area. The Border Security Force (BSF) was also deployed along the beach in view of the cyclone and has also stepped up its efforts to provide assistance to the villagers living in the border area.

BSF has mobilized its resources and personnel to help the affected communities. According to the official statement, BSF’s unwavering commitment is aimed at protecting valuable lives, minimizing suffering, upholding human dignity and instilling a sense of security among the border population.

The BSF in its release said that the vulnerable villagers are being provided shelter while ensuring their safety in these dangerous times. 150 villagers from Thumri and Valavariwand villages have taken shelter in the BSF camp.

Earlier, BSF had accommodated around 100 villagers of Gunao village near Jakhau coast in one of its camps, demonstrating its commitment to protect the lives of the border population at any cost. Commercial flight operations at Gujarat’s Jamnagar airport have been suspended till Friday as a precautionary measure.

According to Jamnagar airport director, the airport has issued NOTAM for three days Wednesday-Friday. Diesel and petrol required to operate the airport in case of emergency have also been stored.

According to NOTAM, Air India and Star Air have canceled their scheduled flights. NOTAM stands for ‘Notice to Airmen’ — it is issued at the airport for outbound flights. Earlier in the day, the IMD had said that cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ would cross Gujarat’s Jakhau port on Thursday night after intensifying into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).

Cyclone rescue preparations are in full swing on the coasts of Gujarat. District authorities are also sharing timely updates on evacuation measures and provision of temporary shelters for evacuees.
