CWC meeting on Sunday; G23 will push for party overhaul to fix accountability for poll disaster

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will chair a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on March 13 to discuss the electoral debacle in five states- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

The results of the assembly elections in the five polled states were declared on March 10. The BJP swept to power in four of the five states, while the AAP made a huge upset defeating the Congress in Punjab.

The apex decision-making body has decided to hold the meeting after the old party suffered a defeat in the assembly polls, while registering a small presence in the other four states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – to replace Punjab with AAP. Had to lose

G23 leaders, who are demanding an organizational change, met late Friday night at senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s residence and discussed their strategy ahead of the crucial CWC meeting.

Sunday’s meeting is likely to see some fireworks from the G23 side as they suggested remedial measures after the final round of assembly elections, when the party lost Puducherry and failed to make a mark in Kerala, Assam and West Bengal. But the high command had not done much on that front.

The current political scenario will also be discussed during the meeting to be held at AICC office in Delhi at 4 pm. Earlier, Sonia Gandhi will preside over the meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Strategy Group at 10 Janpath at 10.30 am.
