Customs arrests Ugandan woman from Delhi airport with heroin worth Rs 14 crore

Customs officials on Tuesday seized heroin worth Rs 14.14 crore from a Ugandan woman who came to India from Dubai at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

The value of the confiscated narcotics has been estimated to be around Rs 14.14 crore as per current international prices.

The woman was stopped at the airport, where, on a search, officers found 2,020 grams in cavities filled with slightly white powder. When the officials got the investigation done, it was found that the material was heroin.

The foreign woman was later arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

In this calendar year, Delhi customs have seized over 100 kg of heroin and arrested over 26 people. Given the spurt in drug smuggling efforts through the passenger route, Indian customs have stepped up screening and investigation of suspects through robust intelligence gathering and pin-point profiling at all international airports.

The Customs Department is at the forefront of the crusade against drug trafficking and syndicates. In September this year, a huge consignment of 3,000 kg heroin was seized at the Mundra port in Gujarat.
