New Delhi: To protect water bodies from any possible contamination, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCBNew guidelines have been issued prohibiting setting up of new petrol pumps (retail outlets) within a distance of 50 meters from the nearest point of lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, wetlands, canals and creeks.
The guidelines sent to all public and private sector oil marketing companies and state pollution control boards also specify ground water and soil sampling protocols to monitor contamination levels at regular intervals, and suggest conservation to be followed by petrol pumps at a distance of more than 50 meters from water bodies.

After reviewing all the suggestions by an expert committee, the final guidelines have now been issued.
The new norm will have to be applied for “all new petrol pumps” where construction starts after the issuance of these guidelines by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Monitoring will be done for all fuel retail outlets which are located within 100 meters from the nearest point of surface water bodies, irrespective of the date of installation.
