The CNN report said that the marriage rate in China continues to decline with a significant drop in 2022.

According to CNN report, China’s population is shrinking while the marriage rate is still at its lowest level.

According to the report, which cites a report by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, 6.8 million couples registered for marriage in 2022, a decrease of 10.5% from 7.63 million marriage registrations done in 2021.

“This is the lowest number since 1986 when available government data began,” it said.

It said pandemic restrictions that kept millions of couples locked in their homes or premises last year are to blame for the decline in the number of couples marrying.

Officials are also dealing with a declining population and declining birth rates.

It mentioned that China’s birth rate is set to decline from 7.52 in 2021 to 6.77 last year, the lowest ever.

China’s death rate, said to have peaked around 1974, was 7.37 deaths per 1,000 people.

It also noted that China’s population is expected to decline in 2022 for the first time in more than 60 years, especially in large, sprawling cities such as Beijing due to rising living costs, slower economic growth and changes in attitudes towards family life.

It said the reduction in the number of more young people is in part a result of China’s one-child policy, which ran from the 1980s to 2016.

China said last month it would launch a pilot project to create “new age” marriages in more than 20 cities.
