covid-19 case: Maharashtra recorded 803 new coronavirus cases today (April 6), a sharp jump of 234 compared to the day before, while three more patients succumbed, the health department said.

With these new additions, the state’s overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,47,673 while the death toll rose to 1,48,454, the department said in a bulletin.

The state recorded 569 cases and two deaths on Wednesday (April 5).

Mumbai COVID Cases:

The bulletin said that 216 cases have been reported in Mumbai and one death is linked to the respiratory disease. It said two more coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the state in Thane city and Jalna district.

Death rate in Maharashtra:

Maharashtra’s coronavirus mortality rate stood at 1.82 per cent, while the recovery rate stood at 98.13 per cent. The bulletin said that 687 patients have recovered from the corona virus infection in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 79,95,232 and there are 3,874 active cases in the state. The health department said 11,385 new coronavirus tests were conducted in the state, taking their total to 8,66,75,772.

Delhi COVID Cases:

Delhi recorded 606 new Covid cases – the highest since last August – with a positivity rate of 16.98 per cent on Thursday, according to data shared by the city government’s health department. The health bulletin said that one more Covid positive person died in the city. However, the “Covid finding was incidental”, it added.

The national capital recorded 620 cases on August 26. On Wednesday (April 5), the city recorded a positivity rate of 26.54 per cent, the highest in nearly 15 months, with 509 people testing positive in a single day. In January last year, the positivity rate had touched the 30 per cent mark.

Delhi witnessed 521 cases and one death on Tuesday (April 4). The positivity rate stood at 15.64 percent. As per the bulletin, the city’s COVID-19 death toll currently stands at 26,534. With the fresh cases, Delhi’s infection tally has risen to 20,12,670. The data showed that 3,569 Covid tests were conducted on Wednesday.

Delhi has seen a spurt in the number of new Covid infections in the last few days amid a sharp rise in H3N2 influenza cases in the country. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the Delhi government is monitoring the spurt in Covid cases in the national capital and is “ready to face any situation”.

Addressing reporters after chairing a review meeting on the Covid situation, Kejriwal said there was no need to worry at the moment and the city government was taking all necessary steps. Delhi recorded 293 fresh cases on Monday, taking the positivity rate to 18.53 per cent, which meant that almost one out of every five people tested gave a positive result.

The city witnessed 429 Covid cases on Sunday, with a positivity rate of 16.09 per cent and one death. It recorded 416 cases on Saturday with a positivity rate of 14.37 per cent. The number of fresh cases had dropped to zero on January 16 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic.

What did the medical experts say,

About 120 of the 7,989 beds in the city’s dedicated Covid hospitals are occupied, while 1,337 patients are under home isolation, the health department said on Thursday. The number of active cases currently stands at 2,060. Amidst a gradual rise in the number of Covid cases in Delhi, medical experts say that the new XBB.1.16 variant of the virus may add to the surge.

However, he added that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behavior and take booster shots of vaccines. They also said that this increase in the number of cases could be the result of more people getting themselves tested for Covid as a precaution when they actually become infected with the influenza virus and develop fever and related symptoms.

ICMR on rising cases in India,

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that the increase in the number of influenza cases is due to Influenza A subtype H3N2. H3N2 virus tends to lead to more hospitalizations than other subtypes. Symptoms include runny nose, persistent cough and fever.
