Coimbatore : To stop wastage of covaxinThe Mettupalayam Government Hospital The administration has started issuing tokens to the beneficiaries.
Chief Medical Officer Dr A Kannan said the decision was taken after there was a sharp drop in the number of people coming to the hospital for vaccination. Since each vial of Covaxin contains 20 doses, this initiative will reduce wastage of vaccine.
“While most people have been vaccinated with both doses, some are going to the hospital to get a booster dose as directed by the health department. But there are still some people who have not got their second job. When such people come in lesser numbers, there can be a waste of the vaccine,” Kannan told TOI. “We give tokens to such people and ask them to come for vaccination after a few days. By doing this we can vaccinate more people than a few.”
As many as 24 beneficiaries can be vaccinated with the Covaxin vial, Dr. he said SeralathanChief Medical Officer of Periyanaikanapalayam Government Hospital, “One vial of Covaxin usually contains a higher dose. This is because an additional vial will be sent for laboratory tests if an adverse effect is detected in the beneficiaries after vaccination. But if no adverse effect is recorded, then We can also use additional doses,” he said.
Seralathan said that with minimal space in the Auto Disable (AD) syringes, beneficiaries can be vaccinated with 0.5 ml of vaccine, which minimizes vaccine wastage. “If there is a dose left, we coordinate with the Village Health Nurses (VHNs) and ask them to send the beneficiaries to the hospital.”
