The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested Maulana Umar Gautam’s son Abdullah for allegedly running a pan-India conversion syndicate. According to an official release of the ATS, Abdullah was arrested from Gautam Buddha Nagar on Sunday. He is being questioned about the sources of funding and links with other accused.

A senior ATS official said that during investigation it was found that Abdullah was deeply involved in the conversion racket and was responsible for distributing money to the converts.

He was working in connivance with other accused including his father Umar Gautam, Jehangir Alam, Kausar and Faraz Shah. He was also associated with the Islamic Dawa Center.

He was found receiving money in his accounts from the same sources from where his father had received the money.

The ATS has so far arrested 17 people including Maulana Umar Gautam, Abdullah, Maulana Kalim Siddiqui, Rameshwaram Kawade alias Adam Alisa Adam, Bhupriya Bando alias Arslan Mustafa, Kaushar Alam and Mohammad Hafiz Idris in this case.

Earlier in October, the economic wing of the UP ATS collected evidence of foreign funding in connection with an alleged illegal conversion racket.

According to reports, the UP ATS has evidence of foreign funding of Rs 57 crore, which was sent through hawala to three people from a conversion syndicate- Maulana Umar Gautam, Kaleem and Salahuddin.
