A Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh has demanded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for gangster Atiq Ahmed, who died in police custody recently.

Rajkumar alias Rajju Bhaiya, who will contest the upcoming local body elections in Prayagraj on a Congress ticket, referred to the gangster-turned-politician as a “martyr” and said his body should be wrapped in the tricolour. Police arrested Rajkumar after it went viral on social media.

He blamed CM Yogi Adityanath’s government for Atiq’s murder and said that the Chief Minister should resign from his post.

Uttar Pradesh urban local body elections will be held in two phases on May 4 and 11, with the counting of votes taking place on May 13, the State Election Commission announced on Sunday. A total of 14,684 seats in 760 urban local bodies will be contested.

On the other hand, Congress city president Pradeep Mishra Anshuman said that the party has expelled Rajkumar, who was a candidate in the upcoming urban local body elections, from the party for six years.

Anshuman said Rajkumar was the Congress candidate for councilor from Azad Nagar in South Malacca.

Anshuman claimed to have a picture of Rajkumar receiving the award from the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and said that whatever happened was a conspiracy.

Rajkumar is undergoing some psychiatric treatment, they said, adding that a prescription for psychiatric drugs was found at his home.

SHO of Dhumanganj police station Rajesh Kumar Maurya said that Rajkumar has been detained and an FIR is being lodged against him.
