Conditions in Bangladesh Probably Closest We Can Get to Play in India: England’s White-ball Captain Jos Buttler

Last Update: February 26, 2023, 16:25 IST

Captain Jos Buttler on Sunday said that England are enjoying the challenge of facing Bangladesh on their low and slow home wickets in the upcoming one-day international series.

England will defend their ODI World Neighbors Cup title India at the end of the year and Buttler told reporters that he was expecting fewer and slower wickets and tougher conditions in Bangladesh, “which is exactly what we want.

“These are the conditions that are probably the closest we will get to playing in India,” he said at the team’s first press conference after arriving here on Thursday.

As a team, we seek this kind of challenge to test ourselves in tough conditions.

The tour will begin with two ODIs on March 1 and 3 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, while the third and final match will take place on March 6 at the Zahoor Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

There will be three Twenty20 Internationals, the first in Chittagong on 9 March and the second back in the capital on 12 and 14 March.

England, the reigning world champions in both formats, are the only visitors since 2015 to win an ODI series in Bangladesh.

Both Australia and New Zealand have lost Twenty20 series against Bangladesh in recent times as they could not cope with the slow wickets of the hosts.

But Butler did not want to rely on past successes and emphasized the strengths of his current team.

“It was a long time ago,” Buttler said of England’s win in their last ODI series in the country in 2016 – when Bangladesh recorded their first Test win against the visitors,

“Bangladesh has a good record at home. We have some very good players in our team. We are excited for the challenge,” he said.

Buttler himself was the top scorer in last year’s Indian Premier League when he scored 863 runs for Rajasthan Royals.

Over the years, we have had a lot of players playing in subcontinent conditions.”

At least two England players, Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali, played in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament which ended earlier this month, while Buttler, Jason Roy and Jofra Archer have done so previously.

Newly signed Will Jacks, who will replace the injured Tom Abel, was the tournament’s leading scorer in the 2021-22 season.
