Jaipur: To Celebrate Holi This year, get ready to spend extra money to buy a water gun and colors of holi, In 2019, the most popular gulal available for Rs 35 to Rs 45 per kg will be available from Rs 100 to Rs 150 per kg.
Traders said that due to fewer cases of Kovid, the demand for gulal has increased in rural and urban markets. This year the demand for dyes is faster than the supply.
TOI on Sunday visited the markets of Walled City and ascertained the reasons behind the hiked prices.
“There has been negligible business during Holi for the last two years. As the cases started dwindling in February, the traders producing Holi colors felt that this year the festival will be celebrated with the same pomp as in the pre-Covid times. So the production has increased. In mid-February, our retail shopkeepers across the state started placing orders for us, which also increased the demand. Ramesh SamtaniWholesaler of Holi colours.
Organic dyes, which are made from natural ingredients such as flower and vegetable dyes, are expensive and people mostly choose colors with fewer chemicals. “The expensive gulal, which is not dangerous for the skin, has arrowroot as its base,” said Abdul Sagir, a wholesaler of Holi colors and water guns in Tripolia market.
Another businessman, Digvijay Bhandari, who deals in corporate gifts for various corporate companies, was also affected by the rise in prices. “We take orders to prepare 5000 to 10,000 gift boxes for Holi. Corporates have given us the same budget for gifting in 2019. When we started procuring gulal directly from factories, we found that the prices have just tripled as compared to 2019,” Bhandari said.
Even the prices of water guns have gone up. “Many small companies manufacturing water guns have shut down in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, due to which the product is not much available in the market. Water guns which were available for Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 are now available for Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 Nitin Sarafia wholesaler of water cannons Johari Bazaar,
