Bhubaneswar: At least 12 places saw the night temperature plummet below 10 degrees Celsius on Friday as cold wave like conditions prevailed in parts of the state
While Daringbadi in Kandhamal district recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 6.5°C, while the city shivered at a minimum 12.1°C, four degrees below the normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said cold wave condition would very likely to continue in parts of the state till January 31 with minimum temperature to drop by 3-5°C at many places.
HR Biswas, scientist and head of the regional IMD center here, said isolated places in 13 districts would witness a major fall in minimum temperature for two days on Saturday and Sunday morning.
According to the IMD, the districts likely to experience cold wave for two days are Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.
The cold wave warning would continue for only five districts from Sunday evening to Monday morning. Thereafter, Biswas pointed out that night temperature would see a gradual rise by 2-3°C. This would be accompanied by chance of rainfall due to western disturbance by February 3.
Biswas said the minimum temperature saw a drop by 3-5°C in interior Odisha pockets while coastal parts recorded a drop by 2-4°C.
In wake of the IMD’s cold wave warning, the office of the special relief commissioner (SRC) issued a routine advisory to all district collectors to remain alert and take needful steps, the official report said.
Former director of the regional IMD center Sarat Chandra Sahu said that another possible western disturbance would trigger light to moderate rainfall mostly in western and north Odisha pockets from February 2 to 5. He said some coastal parts may see light rain for a day.
