Coal India increases supply to power sector

Coal India Limited dispatched about 1.82 million tonnes of coal to power plants on October 28, which is about 43 per cent more than the supply of around 1.27 million tonnes at the same time last year. With this, the state-owned miner has exceeded its target of supplying about 1.7 million tonnes to the power sector by the end of this month. Total dispatches (for power and non-power sectors) increased to 2.11 million tonnes.

Higher supply (not just from CIL but from other sources including Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL), captive coal mines and imported coal) has helped in improving the stock position at power plants, which rose to 7.29 on October 27. 9.42 million tonnes. On October 10 this year, M.T.

Average daily stock at coal-fired thermal power plants rose to five days, as against four days a fortnight ago.

Of the 135 power stations, about four plants with a total capacity of 3,510 MW have zero day stock as on October 27, while 17 plants have a total capacity of 16,430 MW; And the number of plants with a day’s stock stood at 15 (total capacity 16,722 MW) compared to 26 (total capacity 34,930 MW) on 10 October.

While the Mahanadi Coalfields and SECL mines are “doing very well”, the situation in the Eastern Coalfields (which were submerged due to heavy rains) is also gradually improving.

The average daily supply from CIL is close to two lakh tonnes which is usually around the months of February and March. However, in view of the huge demand for coal from thermal power plants, CIL increased the supply in October.
