CIL authorizes PT Bara Daya Energy to import 7.91 lakh tonnes of coal for supply to Gencos – Times of India

New Delhi: State-owned CIL has awarded the contract to PT Big Daya Energy Sources said the consortium will import 7.91 lakh tonnes of coal during August and September for supply to Gencos.

According to sources, a letter was issued on July 9 to the L1 vendor of the medium term tender for the supply of East and West Coast.
Subsequently, CIL awarded contracts for supply of 7.91 lakh tonnes of imported coal to PT Bara Daya Energy Limited (Consortium) to interested companies during August and September.
The companies that have expressed willingness to buy imported coal include CESC, Adhunik Power, Ratan India, Sai Wardha, Avanta Power & Infrastructure Limited, Jindal India Thermal Power Limited, Lanco Amarkantak Power Limited, KSK, ACB India and DB Power.
While 4.295 lakh tonnes of coal will be imported in the month of August, 3.615 lakh tonnes of coal will be imported in the month of September.
Sources said that Coal India in its board meeting held on July 8 decided to cancel the short term tender of 2.416 MT and supply the quantity of imported coal indented against the medium term tender of East and West Coast.
On June 9, CIL said it has floated its first tender for import of 2.416 million tonnes of coal to ensure adequate supply of fuel to power plants in the country.
The move was part of the government’s effort to build up coal reserves to avoid a repeat of the power cuts in April due to the shortage of fossil fuels.
On June 10, CIL floated two medium-term tenders for sourcing 6 million tonnes (MT) of coal from overseas, with an aim to secure domestic fuel supplies amid fears of shortage during monsoon.
In April, Coal Secretary AK Jain had attributed low coal stocks in power plants to several factors, such as increase in power demand due to the post-Covid economy boom, the onset of summer, rise in gas price and A sharp decline in power generation by imported coal, and by coastal thermal power plants.
He had said that several measures are already underway to improve the power supply in the country.
