Meanwhile, the festive spirit skyrocketed in some parts of India as crowds thronged markets and churches on the eve of Christmas 2022.

Devotees thronged St Joseph’s Cathedral in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow on Saturday to attend the midnight prayer meeting. The cathedral complex was decorated with Christmas lights and stars.

Outside, vendors selling Santa caps and people clicking pictures with the grand cathedral in the background lined the streets, while policemen on horses were seen circling the area.

Tourists thronged hill resorts in Himachal’s Shimla for the festive season of Christmas and New Year. Amid rising cases of Covid in some countries, tourists were seen following Covid-appropriate behaviour.

In Kolkata, markets are thronged for last minute cake shopping on the eve of Christmas 2022. Security has been tightened in and around Kolkata to foil any attempt to disturb the law and order situation during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

A senior official said that at least 3,000 personnel of the Kolkata Police have been deployed at the city’s busiest spots such as Park Street, Esplanade, Shakespeare Sarani, Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Russell Street to monitor proceedings over the next few days . on Saturday.
