Christmas 2021: Santa Claus, whom children always eagerly wait for during Christmas, is the most adorable and iconic figure. This plump, red-suited, cheerful man brings so much joy and happiness aboard a ‘One Horse Open Sleeve’ drawn by 8 reindeer, ushering in optimism and gifts on Christmas Eve. Parents teach kids to be nice by earning rewards from Santa. If they’re good, they’ll receive gifts from Santa in their stockings.

So, who is this well-known, mysterious figure – Santa Claus? Before Christmas, here’s everything you need to know about Santa.

Who is Santa?

According to legend, Santa is a cheerful good companion who, with the help of his elves, makes toys for children throughout the year. He is said to have received letters from children requesting their favorite gifts. He lives in the North Pole with his wife Mrs. Claus.

The story of this white-bearded, happy-go-lucky man dates back to 280 AD, when Saint Nicholas, a monk, wandered around to help the needy and sick. This monk used his entire wealth to help the underprivileged. He apparently used it to pay dowry for three sisters who would have otherwise been sold by their father. The saint became the protector of children and sailors.

Another story says that when the people of the Netherlands moved to the colonies of the New World, they spoke of the legend of Sinterklaas, which is Dutch for St. Nicholas. By the year 1700, stories of the saint’s generosity had reached far and wide in America, and pop culture there changed the image of the man. Eventually after his death, the name evolved into Santa Claus.

Well, Santa wasn’t always a healthy person with a round stomach. One author, Washington Irving, in his 1809 book “Knickerbocker’s History of New York” depicted the image of Santa as “a pipe-smoking, slim figure who flies over rooftops in a wagon delivering gifts to good children.”

So, this is how a real man once emerged as the very sweet, high-spirited Santa, whose presence is inevitable during the joyous Christmas.
