‘Chip taker to chip maker’: PM Modi highlights India’s goal at Digital India Week 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Said on 4th July India Wants to become “Chip Taker to Chip Maker” during the inaugural ceremony of Digital India Week-2022.

During the first day of the programme, Modi announced the first group of 30 institutions to receive assistance through the “Chips to Startup” (C2S) programme.

The C2S program aims to train 85,000 specialized manpower in the field of VLSI and Embedded System Design over a period of five years and leapfrog into the ESDM space. It also acts as a catalyst for the growth of startups engaged in fabless design.

The major objectives associated with this initiative are:

  • To generate industry ready manpower in the system / SoC design area to create a vibrant fabless chip design ecosystem.
  • Industry-led R&D Promote translational research and strengthen industry-academic collaborations, which are essential for promoting start-up growth patterns in India.
  • Culture of developing reusable IP cores and ASICs/SoCs/systems for social/strategic sectors.
  • Broadening the ASIC/IC design base in the country by accommodating more academic institutions, and start-ups for the design of IPS/ASIC/System/SOC.
  • To inculcate a culture of entrepreneurship among students and researchers by preserving the intellectual property generated and incubating the startups.

With the goal of developing cost-effective solutions to social problems, it is anticipated that projects will be taken up under the program in areas such as energy and health care, disaster management, safety and security, emerging technologies as well as an intelligent transportation system .

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, “the program will be implemented in around 100 educational institutions/R&D organizations across the country.”

“Besides them, startups and MSMEs can also participate in the program by submitting their proposals for the development of System/SoC/IP Core(s) under the academic-industry collaborative project, Grand Challenge // Hackathon/RFP.”

It is worth mentioning that these are part of the Semiconductor Mission of India, which aims to create a strong semiconductor design ecosystem.

Modi said during the event that India is leading the world in the fourth industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0, and warned that countries that do not accept modern technologies will be left behind.

Additionally, he said that the government is now at the doorsteps and phones of citizens due to the Digital India initiative. According to him, over 1.25 lakh common service centers and rural stores are now bringing e-commerce to rural India, and the technology is also being used for rural properties to offer property documents.
