Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat said on Saturday that China’s ambitions for power at the global level pose an “omnipresent threat” to the stability of South Asia. Delivering the first Ravikant Singh Memorial Lecture here, he said China is making “huge” inroads into South Asia and the Indian Ocean region to strengthen its position as an emerging global power.

General Rawat said that the country’s dealings with Myanmar and Pakistan and its entry into Bangladesh are also not in India’s interest. “Myanmar and Pakistan are the biggest recipients of military hardware from China. They get support from China in global forums,” he said.

On Indo-Pak relations, Rawat said that terrorism sponsored by Pakistan as well as by non-governmental elements is a hindrance in the peace process between India and Pakistan.

“China’s partnership with Pakistan and its stand on Jammu and Kashmir can be described as an anti-India nexus,” he said.
