Child rights body expresses concern over story written in textbooks by money laundering accused Harsh Mander

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written a letter National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) To express dissatisfaction over the inclusion of a chapter in school textbooks by social rights activist Harsh Mander. The commission’s letter raised questions about the inclusion of a story written by a person accused of money laundering.

A retired IAS officer, Mander is currently being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an alleged money laundering case while running a children’s home, news agency ANI reported. In September last year, the ED had raided the premises associated with Mander.

NCPCR chief Priyank Kanungo said Mander’s story titled ‘Weathering the Storm in Ersama’, which is included in the Class 9 English textbook ‘Moments’, was investigated following a complaint. Subsequently, it was found that the story negates the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. The NCPCR requested appropriate action in the matter and informed the Commission within seven days.

Kanungo wrote in the letter, “The story is narrated in such a way that rescue and welfare works are carried out only by NGOs and undermine the country’s machinery including disaster management agencies and other authorities.”

The Commission also included two other stories – ‘A Home on the Street’ and ‘Paying for His Tea’, which are given as suggested readings at the end of the chapter, without cross-checking the current landscape of care has been printed. and the safety of children in the country, it claims.

During this NCERT There will be a reduction in the syllabus of the academic session 2022-23 in all classes.
