Child abuse cases spike in Karnataka amid Covid Mysuru News – Times of India

Data shared by Karnataka Safety Commission child rights (KCPCR) has revealed that children under the age of 18 faced emotional, physical and online abuse after the lockdown was lifted after the first wave. Experts have suggested a comprehensive action plan to protect children from such challenges. Between October 2020 and January 2021, children in the state faced such abuse.
According to the data, in October 2020, 55 children who suffered were subjected to various forms of emotional abuse Such as using abusive or abusive language, humiliating or threatening them, withholding support, etc. November saw 38 such cases, 42 in December and 60 in January 2021, the highest in four months.
During this, 411 children were physically abused. Other major challenges faced by children during these four months include online abuse on social media platforms, child labour, begging etc.
A challenge before parents is to protect children from online abuse with increased screen time after the launch of online educational activities. BN Nandini, Assistant Superintendent of Police Hasan, says that parents contact them to get guidance on how to tackle challenges like online gaming, chatting and befriending strangers on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Karnataka Commissioner for Protection of Child Rights (KCPCR) Chairman Antony Sebastian said that children have to face emotional, physical and other forms of misbehavior. “Counselling for parents, awareness campaigns, activities at panchayat level are essential for the safety of children,” he said.
Nagasimha Rao, director of the Child Rights Trust, said complaints of emotional abuse have increased after the pandemic. “Emotional abuse deeply affects children. Parents and extended family members abuse children by withholding their education, forcing them to marry early, forced labor among many other forms of abuse. Such abuse and deprivation,” he said.
