The Special Court of CBI acquitted famous gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan after 38 years in a case. This case was the first FIR in the criminal life of Chhota Rajan, who is said to be the biggest enemy of don Dawood Ibrahim in the Mumbai underworld, in which he was accused of murderous attack on a police officer in the year 1983.

Chhota Rajan collided with the police while smuggling liquor
Advocate Tushar Khandare, representing Chhota Rajan in this case, told that the case was registered in 1983, when a team of Tilak Nagar police station tried to stop Chhota Rajan, who was bringing smuggling liquor in a taxi. . There were two officers and 4 constables in this police team, while Rajan was accompanied by two other accomplices in the car. When the police stopped the taxi, Chhota Rajan took out a knife and injured a police officer.

The police had arrested Chhota Rajan and one of his accomplices, while one of the accomplices fled. His accomplice, who was arrested along with Chhota Rajan, was later acquitted by the court, but the trial against Rajan was still going on.

In 2015, the case was handed over to the CBI.

Chhota Rajan was brought to India in October 2015 after being arrested in Indonesia. Then the Mumbai Police handed over this case registered against Chhota Rajan to the CBI. In this case, while putting up the final closure report, the CBI had said that due to the very old case, they are not getting any witnesses. Even the knife used in the attack has gone missing.

The special court did not accept the closure report
The Special CBI Court, while rejecting the agency’s closure report, refused to close the case. Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat, appearing for the CBI, argued before the court that the three police constables present at the time of the incident had identified Chhota Rajan well and the defense could not deny it.

Rajan’s lawyer asked – where are the witnesses
On the other hand, Rajan’s lawyer Khandare argued that despite being a very crowded place near Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, the police has failed to produce a single independent witness of the incident. He said Rajan was not directly involved in the matter.

On Thursday, Special CBI Judge AT Wankhede acquitted Chhota Rajan after hearing the arguments of both the sides. The judge acquitted Chhota Rajan under section 235(1) of CrPC.
