CHENNAI: An elderly couple suffered burns in an acid attack while they were sleeping at their house in Minjur on Monday night. Police suspect the miscreants to be robbers who threw acid at the couple as they could not find any valuables in the house. Police are searching for the culprits.
Police said the injured farmer couple – Mani, 61, and Kalavathi, 59, from Merattur near Minjur -are out of danger. They are admitted to the government hospital in Tiruvallur.
The miscreants threw acid through the window early on Tuesday. The couple woke up to a burning sensation on their body. They turned on the lights and screamed for help when the miscreants threw acid at them for the second time.
As neighbours rushed to their house on hearing the couple’s cries, the culprits fled the spot. The neighbours admitted the couple to hospital. Based on a complaint from Mani, the Minjur police registered a case and are investigating.
