Chandigarh: Student dies, 18 injured after 250-year-old tree falls inside school premises

A major accident took place in a school premises in Chandigarh on Friday. Officials said an old tree fell on the students, killing one while injuring 18 others. The injured girls were in the age group of 13-17 years of a girls’ school located in Sector 9.

According to officials, the incident took place when the students had gathered near the tree during the lunch break. The students were taken to a nearby hospital along with a school staff attendant who was injured during the incident, the official said.

The officer said, “The incident was reported at 11:10 am. It was an old peepal tree, which was a kind of heritage tree. Nineteen students and a staff attendant were injured in the incident. We got a child in the incident. The death has been confirmed.” Told. He said that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher tweeted, “Very heart wrenching incident of a tree falling at Carmel Convent School Chandigarh. My condolences to the bereaved families and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. “

According to eyewitnesses, there is an atmosphere of panic in the school premises after the incident. Officials said police and fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to a government multi-specialty hospital in Sector 16 and PGIMER, while some were taken to Fortis Hospital in Mohali.

Rajinder, whose daughter studies in the school, told reporters that the parents got a call from the school and told them about the incident.

He said that his daughter is safe.
