Starting his career as a retired IAS officer, Arjun Ram Meghwal qualified for the Rajasthan Administrative Services in 1982 and served as a District Magistrate.

In a significant reshuffle of the Union Cabinet, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Rajasthan has been appointed as the new Union Law Minister. The appointment gives Meghwal additional responsibilities including charge of Culture and Parliamentary Affairs as Minister of State with an independent charge of the Ministry of Law. It is noteworthy that Meghwal, who is now heading the Law Ministry, did not hold a cabinet rank earlier.

Meghwal assumed the important post of Union Law Minister after Kiren Rijiju, who was re-appointed to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The change came after Rijiju expressed his criticism of the collegium system for the appointment of judges.

Educational qualification

Born on December 20, 1953 in a small village located in the Thar Desert of Bikaner, Arjun Ram Meghwal has a commendable educational background. He completed his bachelor’s degree in law from Dungar College, Bikaner in 1977, followed by a master’s degree in political science in 1979. Apart from this, he also holds an MBA degree, which further enriched his educational profile.

Before joining politics, Meghwal pursued a variety of professions including civil service, social work, agriculture and education. Starting his career as a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, he successfully qualified for the Rajasthan Administrative Services in 1982. This achievement led to his selection for the Rajasthan Industrial Service, where he served as District Magistrate (Collector) in Govt. of Rajasthan.

With a political career spanning over a decade, Arjun Ram Meghwal has emerged as a prominent figure within the BJP. During Prime Minister Modi’s first term, he held the role of Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. His tenure in these ministries contributed to his comprehensive understanding of governance and legislative processes.

In 2009, Meghwal secured a seat in the Lok Sabha as a Member of Parliament from Bikaner, gaining the confidence and support of voters. He was later re-elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in the 2014 general election. Notably, during his second term as an MP, he held the coveted position of Chief Whip of the BJP in the Lok Sabha, demonstrating his astute leadership skills and ability to navigate the political landscape. Additionally, he was appointed by the Speaker as the Chairman of the House Committee in the Lower House, highlighting his influential role in parliamentary proceedings.
