Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday strongly criticized the central agencies. CBI and Enforcement Directorate – for targeting opposition political parties on the “whims of the Centre”.
This reaction of CM comes after the ED summons the National General Secretary of Trinamool Congress. Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira, and to the Minister of State Moloy Ghatak CBI has summoned Trinamool’s Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mandal.
Abhishek, Rujeera and Ghatak have all been summoned to the ED’s Delhi office in the coal scam case.
“Box (Anubrata) and Molloy are being called. Abhishek and his wife have been asked to appear in Delhi, not Kolkata. CBI and ED are behaving like parrots in cages.
The CM said, “Agencies like CBI and ED are being used shamelessly. Whatever the Center is ordering them, these agencies are doing. Only opposition parties are being booked under CBI cases.” . CBI cannot be used to suppress the opposition.”
Abhishek and Rujeera had earlier moved the Delhi High Court, questioning the legality of repeated summons to Delhi when the agency had its office in Kolkata. The HC dismissed the petition, but made it clear that the court did not look into the merits of the case. A fresh summon has been issued after the order of the High Court.
Both Abhishek and Rujira have been asked to appear before the ED in Delhi next week.
It is not clear whether Abhishek’s legal team will challenge the HC order.
Ghatak had earlier appeared before the ED in this connection. He could not be reached for comment.
Anubrata has already challenged the CBI summons in the Calcutta High Court.
Several Trinamool East Midnapore leaders were asked to appear before the NIA in connection with the January 4 blasts in Khejuri. Two people died in the explosion.
It is learned that summons have reached at least 57 Trinamool leaders in the districts.
In the recently concluded civic polls, the Trinamool decimated the BJP in all three municipal bodies in the district, including Contai, where elections were held. The Municipal Council was constituted on Wednesday.
