Cause for concern: 4,531 new Covid cases in Chennai; 8,981 in Tamil Nadu | Coimbatore News – Times of India

CHENNAI: The state on Friday registered over 2,000 new cases for the third consecutive day, when Tamil Nadu 8,981 fresh cases were registered.
After the discharge of 984 patients, 30,807 patients were in isolation on the last day, while on Thursday there were 22,818 patients.
Official records show that 8,944 patients from within the state, five travelers from the United Arab Emirates, three from Singapore and one from the United States tested positive for the viral infection. Besides this, 17 people from West Bengal, five from Bihar, two from Assam and one each from AP, Delhi and Jharkhand tested positive.
Chennai, which recorded the sharpest increase, reported 4,531 new cases – the highest in the state – compared to 3,759 on Thursday. During the same time, the cases in Chengalpet crossed the four-digit mark from 816 to 1,039. Barring Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Vellore and Tenkasi, all other districts reported an increase in the number of fresh cases in the last 24 hours. After Chennai and Chengalpet, Tiruvallur (514), Coimbatore (408), Kancheepuram (257) and Vellore (216) reported over 200 cases.
Active cases rose by nearly 8,000 to 30,817 on Friday. Nearly half of the patients kept in isolation were from Chennai. Although only 14% of active cases in the city were in hospitals, about 34% of non-oxygen beds and 11% of oxygen beds in the city were occupied. About 16% of beds in the city and 7% in the state were occupied, compared to 4% a month ago.
Director of Medical Education Dr Narayanbabu said the state was trying its best to reserve hospital beds for patients with moderate or severe illness. He said, “Patients with mild or asymptomatic are sent to home isolation or Kovid care centres, while patients with comorbidities or moderate illness are referred to health centres. Patients with severe illness will be treated in tertiary care hospitals. ” He added that patients who have not been vaccinated are also under compulsory institutional care.
With eight deaths in the state, the death toll rose to 36,833. Of the eight deaths, three were from Chengalpet, two from Coimbatore and one each from Tiruvallur, Tirunelveli and Karur. Chennai reported zero deaths along with 31 other districts. As many as 4.6 lakh people took the vaccination on Thursday, including 3.3 lakh in the 15-18 years group.
