NEW DELHI: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar-led ten parties delegation including Janata Dal (United), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at South Block in Delhi on Monday to discuss a caste-based census.
Besides the Bihar chief minister, other members of the delegation were Tejashwi Prasad Yadav of RJD, JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary, who is also the minister for education and parliamentary affairs, former chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HUM) president Jitan Ram. . Manjhi, Congress Legislature Party leader Ajit Sharma and BJP leader and Bihar minister Janak Ram, CPI-ML Legislature Party leader Mehboob Alam, AIMIM’s Akhtarul Imam, Mukesh Sawhney VIP K, Suryakant Paswan CPI and Ajay Kunar cpm.
After the meeting, Nitish Kumar told the media, “People in Bihar and across the country have similar opinions on this issue. We are thankful to the PM that he listened to us. Now, he has to take a decision on this.”
RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav after meeting with PM Modi on Caste Census: Our delegation met PM today for caste census not only in the state (Bihar) but across the country.   • Nitish Kumar had said that in 2019 a resolution regarding caste-based census was passed unanimously in the Bihar Legislative Assembly as well as the Legislative Council. A resolution was once again passed unanimously in the state legislative assembly in 2020.
  • Meanwhile, Kumar said if the Center does not agree then “Bihar will go ahead with the caste-based census”. However, the central government has so far refused to accept the demand.
  • Minister of State for Home in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on 20 July Nityanand Rai had said: “The Government of India has decided as a policy that the census shall not count the caste-wise population other than the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes.”
  • On March 10, 2021, the Union Home Ministry clarified to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on the caste-related details obtained from the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. The Union Home Ministry in a reply said that the raw caste data has been provided to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) for classification and classification of the data.
  • “The Office of the Registrar General, India provided logistic and technical support in the conduct of SECC-2011. The raw caste data has been provided to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) for classification and classification of the data.
