Berhampur: Family members of Swagatika Behera, an officer of G.Udayagiri police station in Kandhamal district who allegedly killed herself on Saturday, staged protest in front of the police station on Sunday demanding the arrest of the inspector in-charge for her death.
“Rebati Sabar, IIC G.Udayagiri, was responsible for the death of my daughter. She should be arrested and dismissed from service,” said Usharani Behera, mother of Swagatika, who was found hanging in her quarter. She was staying alone. “This protest is to get justice for the death of my daughter,” said the 50-year-old widow.
“We have registered a case under different sections of the IPC, including abetment to suicide, against the IIC on Saturday night based on the complaints of the deceased’s mother,” said SP (Kandhamal) Vinit Agrawal. He said investigation is on to ascertain the cause of death.
Usharani of Niramarpur in Khurda district alleged her daughter was forced to take the extreme step as she was being mentally harassed by the IIC. “The IIC would also allegedly use abusive language at her. Once, she even wanted to quit her job for this reason,” Swagatika’s mother said, adding her daughter had also apprised the sub-divisional police office of G.Udayagiri about the situation.
