Reports have emerged that some Agniveer applicants are using unfair means to complete the selection process in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

The recruitment process for Agniveers is underway across the country under the controversial Agneepath scheme announced by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) last June. Amidst these reports, it has come to light that some Agniveer applicants in Kolhapur, Maharashtra are using unfair means to complete the selection process.

According to reports, some youths allegedly consumed steroids to pass the recruitment. Meanwhile, the process of recruitment of Mumbai Police is going on simultaneously with the recruitment of Agniveer and similar incidents have been reported in police recruitment. During the recruitment, physical test was conducted in all the districts of the state. Some candidates have been found doping in this physical test.

These incidents have been reported from various districts of Maharashtra including Nanded, Raigad and Thane regions. Police have recovered two syringes and a liquid bottle from the arrested candidates from Nanded and Raigad and Thane districts. The police have to send blood and urine samples of such suspected candidates to the lab. If any drug is found in the blood of such candidates, then the test report from the lab comes positive. Once the report is found positive, the police or the concerned authorities have the right to take action against that candidate.

This year 18 lakh candidates have applied for Maharashtra Police Recruitment. Means about 1000 candidates have applied for one seat. To curb such malpractices, physical test is now being conducted before the written examination.

What does doping mean?

In the past, athletes or runners have reportedly taken the steroid to keep their energy levels up. Doping or taking steroids or drugs in sports is a punishable offence.

Government’s National Anti-Doping Agency India Takes action against athletes under this law. As per the rules, if someone is found consuming steroids or doping in the field, then such candidates are immediately investigated. Strict action is taken against such candidates if the report comes positive in this test. The punishment can be severe as according to the law the athlete can be banned for five to seven years. In severe cases, the candidates may be banned for their entire life. In case of recruitment examination, if any candidate is found consuming any kind of intoxicant during the recruitment, strict action can be taken against him.

Is doping easy to detect?

According to some experts, it cannot be ascertained from the face of the candidates whether someone has doped or taken steroids. On finding any intoxicant or any suspicious object with those candidates, the police gets suspicious and then further action is taken.

Speaking about the types of doping, Dr. Avinash Bhondve, Former President, IMA (Maharashtra) said, “There are many types of doping or injection for any physical test. In the era of competition, youth resort to this wrong method so that they do not get left behind. I think it has long term consequences. Youngsters can become addicted to these steroids or injections. It can also cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attack. This can also increase the risk of cancer, so the youth should stay away from all these medicines.
